Olvera Street, known also as El Pueblo, is the location of one of the oldest animal blessings in the United States. Located in the heart of Los Angeles, California, this small village attracts over two million visitors a year. Although this annual animal blessing became popular around 1930, Dr. Laura Hobgood-Oster, an expert on animals in religion, researched U.S. blessing events and believes it may actually reach back to 1781 and the founding of Los Angeles.
In the early days, when Los Angeles was a tiny pueblo, Angelinos journeyed miles to attend mass at Mission San Gabriel. In response to local appeal, many rancheros donated cattle to raise funds for the Biscailuz Building nestled near El Pueblo's Plaza Park.
